Connecting to the Stat Apps Server (WinCompute)

Connecting to the Stat Apps Server (WinCompute)

Wincompute is back up as of 3:30 p.m. on December 4th. If you are connecting through the web browser, no action is required. If you are connecting via RDP, you must delete your existing Wincompute.rdp file and then reconfigure your connection using the instructions below for both Windows and macOS. Download the new RDP file using the link provided for your operating system, and then follow the corresponding configuration steps.

The Stat Apps Server (also called WinCompute) gives UT Austin students, faculty, and staff access to a Windows remote desktop with statistical and mathematical software. Permission does not need to be granted to access the server; all current students, faculty, and staff with an active EID can connect.

Guidelines for Using the Stat Apps Server

  • The Stat Apps Server is not for file storage.
Profiles are not retained long-term and therefore should not be used for storing files.
Instead, store files in your UT OneDrive or UT Box account, download them to the Stat Apps Server to work, then re-upload files at the end of your session. You can also share local drives from your computer through the remote desktop connection to access your files that way.

  • Do not store confidential data on the server.
Delete all confidential data before logging out.
For more information on data classification, see UT Data Classification.

  • Users may not have access to all software at all times.
There are a limited number of seats on the server, with an even more limited number of licenses for some software.

  • The Stat Apps Server is an instructional tool intended for coursework, short-duration personal projects, or testing a new software package prior to purchasing.
It is not recommended for dissertations, theses, publications, research, or time-sensitive projects. Availability cannot be guaranteed.

Map a Network Drive or Austin Disk Share

If you need to access a departmental or research shared drive while connected to WinCompute, follow the steps below to map the network drive in your Remote Desktop session.

Before you begin: You must have permissions to access the network drive you’re mapping.

Steps to Map a Network Drive

  1. Open File Explorer: from the Start Menu (Windows icon) in the lower-left corner, select or search for File Explorer.

  2. Click This PC from the left panel then select the Computer tab (if it isn’t already active).

  3. Select Map network drive from the ribbon.

  4. Select any unused drive letter from the Drive drop-down menu.

  5. In the Folder field, enter the address for the network drive. For Austin Disk shares, the path should look like \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\<DEPTName>\<ShareName>.

    1. Replace <DEPTName> with your department’s name or abbreviation and <ShareName> with the shared folder name.

    2. For Dr. Su Yeong Kim’s Austin Disk share, enter `\\austin.utexas.edu\disk\hdfs\SYKim`

  6. Check the box labeled Reconnect at sign-in.

  7. Click Finish.

  8. Your EID credentials should be passed through and allow the connection to be made. Or, you maybe be prompted to sign in. Use the username and password for the network share.

The mapped drive will now appear under This PC in File Explorer each time you log into your WinCompute session.

Note

  • Drive Name Placeholder:
Replace <ShareName> in the folder path with the actual departmental or project share name assigned to your group (for example, BIOShare, CHEMData, or CNSProjectDrive).
If you are unsure which share name to use, contact CNS OIT for assistance via https://cns.utexas.edu/help .
