Bambu 3D Printers

Bambu 3D Software No Longer Works on UT Austin Networks

Root Cause

Bambu Lab software depends on cloud services whose DNS resolution chain ultimately relies on Alibaba‑controlled infrastructure, which is blocked by UT Austin under state‑mandated security restrictions.

Technical Analysis

  • bambulab.com resolves via Cloudflare (allowed)

  • us.mqtt.bambulab.com (required for printer control) resolves to emqx.cloud

  • emqx.cloud uses Alibaba (alidns.com/aliyun.com ) authoritative DNS

  • aliyun.com is explicitly blocked by UT due to prohibited technology restrictions -

https://dir.texas.gov/information-security/covered-applications-and-prohibited-technologies

  • As a result:

    • Domain Name System (DNS) resolution fails

    • Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) messaging fails

    • Bambu Studio and printer cloud services stop functioning

Possible workarounds

Option 1: Personal hotspot

Connect both the printer and the computer running Bambu Studio to a personal hotspot (phone or dedicated hotspot).

Option 2: USB / microSD (offline printing)

If the 3D printer allows for USB printing, then you can save the generated print file to a USB flash drive or microSD card, and print directly from the printer without any network connectivity.
