MX150 Pin Header Custom Shroud Integration

MX150 Pin Header Custom Shroud Integration

Overview

We’ve developed custom 3D-printed shrouds and plugs for MX150 pin headers that allow boards to be mounted directly to enclosure walls. This approach reduces internal wiring and optimizes space usage while maintaining compatibility with external MX150 receptacles.

Supported Configurations

Currently supported pin header options:

  • Vertical: 6, 16, 20

  • Right-angle: 16, 20

Pin Specifications:

  • Tin coated, 2.5µm plated pins

  • Vertical: 16.09mm mating pin length

  • Right angle: 12.15mm mating pin length

Keying:

  • Currently only Key A is supported.

How It Works

  • Enclosures are designed with cutouts similar to Molex-supplied MX150 panel mounts (without mounting holes).

  • A custom printed shroud and bonded and sealed to the enclosure.

  • The PCB pin headers slide directly into the connector shroud.

  • The PCB is secured by screwing it into the enclosure.

  • External interface remains the same with standard MX150 receptacles.

Assembly Process

  1. Prepare the enclosure: Ensure the enclosure has the correct MX150-style cutouts.

  2. Install the shroud: Bond the 3D-printed shroud and seal to the enclosure wall.

  3. Position the PCB: Align the PCB so that the pin headers line up with the shroud.

  4. Insert the pin headers: Slide the headers fully into the shroud until seated.

  5. Secure the PCB: Screw the PCB into the enclosure at the designated mounting points.

  6. Connect externally: Plug the external MX150 receptacle into the enclosure interface.

PCB Constraints

  • Header orientation: Vertical Pin headers must exit out the bottom of the board.

    • This is required due to PSOM stackup height.

    • For 90deg connections, the connectors can be on the Front face.

  • Clearance: There is 4.5 mm of distance from the enclosure inner surface to the top surface of the PCB.

    • Be mindful of tall components on the underside.

  • Right-angle headers: Must be aligned flush with the PCB edge.

  • Vertical headers: Maintain a 5.5 mm keep-out zone in all directions around the header footprint to accommodate the shroud. Some components may be able to placed closer but consider this as a general rule of thumb

  • Standardization: Stick to supported sizes if possible (12, 16, 20 vertical; 16, 20 right-angle). Additional sizes can be added if absolutely required.
