Preparing the Tubes

Preparing the Tubes

  1. Take the tubes out of the box

    1. Sort the tubes into desired groups - keep stickers on to match to the BOM

      1. Front Bulkhead

      2. Floor Tubes

      3. Trailing Arm Tubes/Rear Tubes

      4. House Tubes (Dynamics Tabs)

      5. Remaining Front Tubes

  2. Prepping the Tubes

    1. Clean the ends of the tube (interior and exterior)

      1. Using an angle grinder with a sanding attachment, or an air tool with a sanding attachment

        1. On the exterior of each tube, sand about an inch from the end of each tube (better to do more than enough)

      2. Using a Dremel with the small sandpaper attachment or an air tool

        1. On the interior of each tube, sand about an inch from the end of each tube (DO NOT TOUCH THE MITER)

    2. Cleaning Set Up

      1. Clamp a tube in the vice

        1. Use welding gloves to protect tubes from scratching

      2. Angle grind

      3. Rotate

      4. Finish Angle grinding

  3. Assembling the Tubes with Jigs

    1. Set up all tubes you can and test fit, and then feather if there are gaps

      1. Coplanar tubes generally have decently accurate miters

    2. If there is no gap or step

      1. Tack at four points and then full weld between the tacks

    3. If there is a gap or step

      1. Feather the inside face of the miter

  4. Feathering the Miters

    1. Using a Dremel or air tool (preferably Dremel) on the inside face of the miter

      1. Do not take off too much material

      2. Guess and Check by feathering a little, then test fitting and repeat

  5. Additionally Notes:

    1. Use right-angle magnets to ensure perpendicularity

    2. Use a magnetic digital level to ensure tubes are level

      1. Specifically on the bell crank tube

    3. Take pictures to document the process for next time and portfolio
