Printing at UT

Printing at UT

Terminology Overview

Managed printers at UT are set up on a print queue managed by LAITS. These printers serve multiple users in a department and will be networked using ethernet. WIFI printing is NOT supported at UT Austin due to protocol and security issues.

Unmanaged printers usually lack a print server queue and are connected by USB to a single computer.

Use of Personal Devices

Generally, LAITS does not install managed printers on personal devices. TAs or graduate students requesting installation should be directed to their department administrator for approval and instructions.

Departmental approval is required, especially for requests to print to a color printer. Color printing is costly, and departments often use print codes or user authorization to monitor and track usage.

Print Codes & User Authentication

Some printer manufacturers offer settings that require a print code in order to print to either the BW or Color queue to meter usage and prevent abuse of certain queues (e.g. Ricoh, Konica-Minolta, and Canon model printers can be found to use print codes on-campus).

Print codes are NOT managed by LAITS and instead are distributed by the department. LAITS can enable/disable printing with codes per the department request, but the individual code management is handled by the department.

If you need a print code, then you will need to reach out to your department first, then LAITS can assist with installation.
