Remote access of university-owned computers

Remote access of university-owned computers

This is an alternative to LogMeIn for Windows machines. It uses Window's Remote Desktop Connection software.

Setting up VPN software on your personal machine

Inspiration for the procedure below came from:

https://wikis.utexas.edu/display/networking/Connecting+to+the+UT+VPN+Service
  1. Get Duo two-factor authentication software

    1. Get the mobile app 'Duo mobile'

    2. Set up your account, I recommend with push notifications

    3. You'll need your phone for the rest of the set-up below to authenticate all your logins

  2. Download and install Cisco Anyconnect

    1. If you already have Duo two-factor authentication set up, just got to:

https://vpn.utexas.edu

Actually connecting to the computer

  1. Make sure IT had given you access to the remote desktop you want to access

    1. Contact the group IT person and tell them which machine you want access to. It may be difficult to get access if the university-owned computer you want to use does not meet the latest security and encryption specs. You might have to do some major reconfiguring with IT to make this work...

  2. Open the Cisco Anyconnect VPN software on your personal machine

  3. Enter 'vpn.utexas.edu' and click 'connect'

  4. You will be prompted to enter a username, password, and second password

    1. username: <your EID>

    2. password: <your EID password>

    3. second password:

      1. push <-- this pushes a notification to your phone that you must approve via Duo in 60 seconds!

      2. sms <-- this option texts SMS passcodes to your phone that can be used on the next attempt as the second password.

      3. phone <-- this calls you and you have to click a number

  5. Open the Remote Desktop Connection app

    1. Mac computers: Install Windows App from the App store

  6. Log into the computer using your credentials and the computer's name. For example:

computer name: ECE-827066.austin.utexas.edu username: austin\<your eid> <--- the 'austin\' indicates that you're on the utexas domain password: <your eid password>

NOTE: Logging into the remote session will log off anyone who is using the computer, both locally and remotely!!!

Logging Onto Bravo-Growth

As of April 2023, IT doesn't allow LogMeIn connection to Bravo. You need to go through Microsoft RDP Now. Updated by JAM 04/05/2023

On PC Computers

  1. Similar to the information given above, you need to be connected to the campus network. This means if you are at home, you need to use the Cisco VPN client discussed above. If you are on UT wifi, you should be fine without using the VPN.

  2. After confirming your are on the campus network, launch remote desktop and enter the computer/gateway information

    1. The computer name is bravo-growth.mer.utexas.edu

    2. You also need to set a remote desktop gateway server. This is in the "Advanced settings" for me. The server name is rdg.austin.utexas.edu. You may need to uncheck "Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses."

  3. You can now connect to Bravo-growth. It will first attempt to connect to the gateway. This will require a sign in with your UT EID. The username should be austin\"eid". From here, it will send you a DUO notification-- for me this was a phone call that I had to authenticate.

  4. It should then ask for a local machine sign-in. This is where you can put Bravo-growth's sign-in-- username: lase

On MAC Computers

Unfortunately due to an old RDP client on Bravo-Growth (because of the old OS) this doesn't work on Mac. You will need to remote desktop into a PC, then follow the instructions above. So far, it doesn't seem like the latency is an issue even though we're daisy chaining remote connections.

NOTE: Logging into the remote session will log off anyone who is using the computer, both locally and remotely!!!
