How to Get Origin

This page describes how to purchase the student edition of Origin scientific plotting software. A future page describing a group license also needs to be added.

Purchasing and Downloading

You CANNOT buy Origin on the Procard. The credit card you use to buy student edition must match the name on your student ID and your credit card.

  1. Go to:

http://www.originlab.com/index.aspx?go=Products/OriginStudentVersion

or where ever the student edition download is

  1. Select the 1-year license option

  2. Follow the download instructions

  3. A few notes about the forms you fill out:

    1. Use your utexas email address for all email fields

    2. Use your credit card information, NOT the Procard

    3. Make sure the billing address matches your credit card info

    4. For "organization", use "University of Texas at Austin"

  4. After purchasing, several emails will be sent to you, the most important email is the one requesting that you verify your student status

    1. Send an email that looks like the following to orders@originlab.com

Hello, I want to verify my student status for my student version of Origin. Attached is a copy of my student ID. To further verify that I'm a student, below is a link to my university's directory, which shows that I'm a graduate student. http://www.utexas.edu/directory/index.php?q=stephen+march&scope=all&submit=Search Please let me know if you have any questions, Stephen

  1. It should take ~1 day for the OriginLab staff to verify your student status

    1. After your status is verified, you will get (in email) a software license key

  2. To download Origin, you must follow the download links that were sent to your email

    1. NOTE: You have to create a new account (even though you created one during the purchasing process) in order to download the software

  3. After the download, you will get another email with a link to a virtual license key. You need to copy and paste this into the appropriate place when you first open Origin

    1. NOTE: The email link to the virtual key is only valid for 24 hours

Renewing the Origin License

  1. Perform the same steps as the first time you got the software. Origin still has to verify that you're a current student. Just send the same email again.

Reimbursement

  • Keep the invoice from OriginLab

  • Give it to Christine to figure out how to get reimbursed

  • The reimbursement takes ~3-4 weeks to occur after you talk to Christine
