Windows/Mac P-Touch Editor v6 (USB-C) – this seems to work very well and connecting to Excel documents via Box/OneDrive works nicely - note you’ll need the serial number from inside the label maker’s back cover. Just use the last 9 digits. ref: b5g656433 | https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=e560bteus
Instructions (Windows): Install the Printer Driver and Software on a Computer (Windows) | PT‑E310BT | PT‑E510 | PT‑E560BT |
Android & iOS (Bluetooth) search your appstore for Brother Pro Label Tool – this seems to work somewhat but is totally fiddly and my phone lost the Bluetooth connection a few times. I wouldn’t want to use this to make more than 1 label and I would probably just use the labelmaker itself | Refer:

Label Cartridges for Cable Wraps
Note there are 2 types of cable labels available for this printer: |
PREFERRED TXE-FX251 – 1” flexible ID cable wrap I like this one a lot b/c wraps can be as long as needed for large cables
|
NOT PREFERRED, DO NOT KEEP IN INVENTORY TZE-SL251 – 1” self-laminating cable wrap I don’t like this one b/c it works best for small cables given the limited area for cable text - when trying to label cat-5e or larger cable, the clear lamination does not wrap all the way around the cable to protect the printed text. There is only enough white area for text to hold 2 lines of text. The only positive of this label is that the wrap could be 4+ inches long if you wanted to write a book on the cable. |
Printing Basic Cable Wrap Labels Using the Label Maker
Using Labeler |
|---|
Press clear > text & format > ok Insert TXE-FX251 – 1” flexible ID cable wrap cartridge press “cable wrap” > choose UOM (unit of measure) = CAT5/6 > ok (if you want to make longer cable wraps for larger cable, choose UOM = LENGTH w/ VALUE = 1.5+”)
type cable # text (for multiple lines, press return) press print (press shift-print to print multiple copies)
If you printed more than 2 lines of text, the 3rd+ lines were likely truncated on the repeat at the bottom of the bable. Install the label on the cable starting at the bottom of the sticker then wrap so all text is visible when installed.

Insert TXE-FX251 – 1” flexible ID cable wrap cartridge Connect printer to PC w/ USB cable & turn on power to printer Launch P-Touch Editor 6 Choose Cable Wrap (not self-laminating) Choose 24x25mm Wrap_Rotate& Repeat_CAT5 > Create Hold down shift and roll your mouse wheel to zoom preview larger (if needed). Or, click view > zoom > zoom in. Double-click on text window and type cable # text (for multiple lines, press return. To turn off text repeat (if you have several lines), click on the text box and uncheck text repeat on the right pane > cable wrap> option > text repeat
Click Print. Set the number of copies. Set quality to High Resolution (especially if your text is really small). Turn off auto cut if you want a long string of labels. Turn on half cut if you want them scored for easy peeling.

Printing multi-line cable wrap labels from an Excel cable list spreadsheet
Using PC |
|---|
In Excel, create and save a spreadsheet with the cable numbers, source, destination, etc. (pro-tip: create and edit the spreadsheet using web-based Excel in o365/Box rather than the stand-alone application Excel to make further editing easier while you are setting up the label printer). Be sure to make headers (like Line 1, Line 2, etc) in row 1. Now we need to combine the 3 lines of text into 1 cell w/ soft-returns between lines so the printer will print the whole row on 1 label. Create a new column D header in D1 called “Combined”. In cell D2, copy & paste this formula: =A2&CHAR(10)&B2&CHAR(10)&C2 Copy cell D2, highlight all the rest of the D cells below, and paste. Note the (virtual) path where you saved the file on your local harddrive.
Insert TXE-FX251 – 1” flexible ID cable wrap cartridge in the printer Connect printer to PC w/ USB cable & turn on power to printer Launch P-Touch Editor 6 Choose Cable Wrap (not self-laminating) Choose the size label you want. For Cat-53, use 24x25mm Wrap_Rotate& Repeat_CAT5. Click Create. Hold down shift and roll your mouse wheel to zoom preview larger (if needed). Or, click view > zoom > zoom in. If you want longer labels for larger cables, adjust the cable length on the left pane under printer. Turn off text repeat (if you have several lines), click on the text box and uncheck text repeat on the right pane > cable wrap> option > text repeat Click Database > Open. Navigate to the (virtual) path of your spreadsheet.
If your spreadsheet has multiple sheets, choose the correct one. Assuming your spreadsheet has headers in the 1st row, leave “Header Row Contains Field Names” checked.
Click on the “Combined” header in the bottom pane and drag it onto the label preview.
Click Print. Set the number of copies to 2. Set quality to High Resolution (especially if your text is really small). Choose Database > All Records. Turn off auto cut if you want a long string of labels. Turn on half cut if you want them scored for easy peeling. DO NOT CLICK PRINT YET!
Very important if you want each pair of labels to be together on the chain: click More Settings and make sure “Collate” is checked.
Click OK. Click Print.

Creating multi-field equipment labels
Using PC |
|---|
In Excel, create and save a spreadsheet with the relevant equipment list details you want to include on the labels. In this example, we have columns for drawing #, room #, Mnemonic, Manufacturer, Model, and Description. (pro-tip: create and edit the spreadsheet using web-based Excel in o365/Box rather than the stand-alone application Excel to make further editing easier while you are setting up the label printer). Be sure to make headers (like Line 1, Line 2, etc) in row 1.
Note the (virtual) path where you saved the file on your local harddrive.
Insert the size & color of label you want to use in the printer. In this example we’ll use 1/2” white labels with black text (TZE-231). Connect printer to PC w/ USB cable & turn on power to printer Launch P-Touch Editor 6 Choose New Label Click Create. Hold down shift and roll your mouse wheel to zoom preview larger (if needed). Or, click view > zoom > zoom in. Click “Check Media” to change the type of cartridge you’re using. Set the length of your labels on the left pane under printer. For this example, we’re going to make 3” long labels.
Click Database > Open. Navigate to the (virtual) path of your spreadsheet.
If your spreadsheet has multiple sheets, choose the correct one. Assuming your spreadsheet has headers in the 1st row, leave “Header Row Contains Field Names” checked.
Click on the header in the bottom pane of each field you want to include and drag it onto the label preview. Adjust sizes, layout, etc as required. (pro-tip: once you have a field sized the way you like it, copy & paste it to make a duplicate and then drag the next field onto that duplicate field). You can also add graphics, QR codes, text, etc. here.
Click Print. Set quantity of copies. (normally we print 2 copies of each equipment label for gear whch is in racks - one for the front and one for the back) Set quality to High Resolution (especially if your text is really small). Choose Database > All Records. Turn off auto cut if you want a long string of labels. Turn on half cut if you want them scored for easy peeling. DO NOT CLICK PRINT YET IF YOU ARE PRINTING MULTIPLE COPIES!
