Classroom as a third techer

Hallie

  • What do you want the classroom to teach? What do you want the children to learn?

  • Aestethics - how does the room make you feel? Is it soft, warm, ambient, natural, and light as oppsed to heavy?

  • The classroom environment should regulate children, create curiosity, and sustain attention.

  • The environment should promote relationship and communication through provacations and collaboration

 

Materials

Hallie

  • We should think about how we want children to use the materials. If we dont know, then they won't know.

  • Limited by ample

  • Creative materials that are open-ended and curious, but also motivate them to problem solve. 

  • Its a good sign if they are asking questions

  • How can you prgress materials and create connecting experiences that keep their interst with the limit of safety?

  • We should consider the flow of energy through the room and make sure there is an easy way in and out of every space

  • Social exchange is essential to learning

  • We should create an atmosphere of serenity and discovery

  • It is dangerous to separate emotion from intelligence 

  • Aesthetics are a vital need - vital meaning life giving

  • Aesthetics are a vibration that activate learning

 

Incoorporating new ideas into classrooms

  • We do not have to reinvent the wheel. We all have access to past lab school lesson plans, including Hallie's, that can be a resource to us.
