This page describes how to access the share drive for different operating systems. This system runs using a Samba or Windows file sharing protocol.
NOTE: This won't work outside of the UT network unless you use ssh tunneling.
There is already a 'share' user created on the server that can be accessed by anyone that knows the credentials. This user's home directory will act as our common file repository. The easiest way to access the 'share' directory is directly (by logging in as the 'share' user) using one of the following methods:
Windows 10
Open File Explorer and select 'This PC'
On the ribbon at the top of the window go to computer\Map network drive
Choose a Drive letter in the 'Drive:' drop-down menu. The letter doesn't particularly matter, so long as it is not one that you already use, e.g. the c drive. You're generally safer if you pick something farther into the alphabet, like y or z
In the 'Folder:' field, type '\\lase.mer.utexas.edu\share'
Check the 'Reconnect at logon' box
Select 'Finish', and a dialog box will open to let you log in
In the 'User Name:' field, type 'share'
In the 'Password:' field, type 'GaNSb'
Windows 7
Click on the Start Menu (bottom left corner of desktop)
Right click on 'Network' (right side of the Start Menu)
Click on 'Map Network Drive...'
Choose a Drive letter in the 'Drive:' drop-down menu. I recommend picking the letter Z
In the 'Folder:' field, type '\\lase.mer.utexas.edu\share'
Check the 'Reconnect at logon' box
Select 'Finish', and a dialog box will open to let you log in
In the 'User Name:' field, type 'share'
In the 'Password:' field, type 'GaNSb'
You can now access the share drive using the chosen drive letter and using the credentials above
Windows Vista
Click on the Start Menu (bottom left corner of desktop)
Right click on 'Network' (right side of the Start Menu)
Click on 'Map Network Drive...'
Choose a Drive letter in the 'Drive:' drop-down menu
In the 'Folder:' field, type '\\lase.mer.utexas.edu\share'
Check the 'Reconnect at logon' box
Click on the blue text reading 'different user name'
In the 'User Name:' field, type 'share'
In the 'Password:' field, type 'GaNSb'
Click 'OK'
Click 'Finish'
You can now access the share drive using the chosen drive letter
Windows XP
Click on the Start Menu (bottom left corner of desktop)
Right click on 'My Computer' (right side of the Start Menu)
Click on 'Map Network Drive...'
Choose a Drive letter in the 'Drive:' drop-down menu
In the 'Folder:' field, type '\\lase.mer.utexas.edu\share'
Check the 'Reconnect at logon' box
Click on the blue text reading 'different user name'
In the 'User Name:' field, type 'share'
In the 'Password:' field, type 'GaNSb'
Click 'OK'
Click 'Finish'
You can now access the share drive using the chosen drive letter
Ubuntu (or Debian based Linux)
Install Samba File-System
sudo aptitude install smbfsMount the share
sudo mkdir /media/lase-share
sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=share, password=***** //lase.mer.utexas.edu/share /media/lase-shareYou can now access the share drive at /media/lase-share
Mac
Finder -> Go-> connect to server -> "smb://lase.mer.utexas.edu/share"
User: share
Password: GaNSb
