What is the Pyramids and Pharaohs/Palms Trees Test?

An assessment tool designed to evaluate semantic memory and associative reasoning in individuals.

• It assesses a person’s ability to understand and identify the relationships between concepts or objects, relying on non-verbal reasoning and knowledge stored in long-term memory.

• It helps identify the extent to which language impairments are related to semantic memory deficits versus other linguistic difficulties.

• It is a semantic association test administered through different modalities (pictorial and verbal) and is heavily influenced by the sociocultural environment. 

• We use two versions of the PPT according to the patient’s language profile (se Administration tab for more details):

  • Pyramids and Palm Trees Test (Howard and Patterson, 1992), developed for English Speakers

  • Pyramids and Pharaohs Test, Pyramids and Palm Trees adapted for Spanish Speakers

¿Qué es la Prueba de Pirámides y Faraones/Palmeras?

Una herramienta de evaluación diseñada para valorar la memoria semántica y el razonamiento asociativo en individuos.

• Evalúa la capacidad de una persona para comprender e identificar las relaciones entre conceptos u objetos, basándose en el razonamiento no verbal y en el conocimiento almacenado en la memoria a largo plazo.

• Ayuda a determinar en qué medida las alteraciones del lenguaje están relacionadas con déficits en la memoria semántica frente a otras dificultades lingüísticas.

• Es una prueba de asociaciones semánticas que se administra en diferentes modalidades (pictórica y verbal) y que está fuertemente influenciada por el entorno sociocultural.

• Utilizamos dos versiones de la prueba PPT según el perfil lingüístico del paciente (consulte la pestaña de Administración para más detalles):

  • Pyramids and Palm Trees Test (Howard y Patterson, 1992)/ Test de Pirámides y Palmeras para personas que hablan Inglés

  • Pyramids and Pharaohs Test (Martínez-Cuitiño, Macarena y Barreyro, Juan Pablo, 2008), Teste de Pirámides y Faraones: adaptación del Pyramids and Palm Trees para personas hispanohablantes.

When to Administer

The PPT is administered at the following timepoints in the participants DOMINANT LANGUAGE:

• Pre-treatment

• Post-treatment

• 6 month follow up

• 12 month follow up

Cuándo Administrar

El PPT se administra en los siguientes momentos en el IDIOMA DOMINANTE de los participantes:

Structure of the Test

• We use the pictorial version of 20 triads.

  • The test presents a triad of images or words: one stimulus (e.g., “bottle”) and two choices (e.g., “mug” and “cup”).

  • The task is to select the item most closely associated with the stimulus. 

• A score of 17 or less is indicative of semantic impairment.

  • Among the control subjects, none failed more than three triads in any modality. This establishes a cutoff score of 2, meaning that a patient with semantic deficits will encounter difficulties with more than two triads.

Estructura de la Prueba

• Usamos la versión pictórica de 20 tríadas.

  • La prueba presenta una tríada de imágenes o palabras: un estímulo (por ejemplo, “botella”) y dos opciones (por ejemplo, “taza de café ” y “vaso”).

  • La tarea consiste en seleccionar el elemento más estrechamente asociado con el estímulo.

• Un puntaje de 17 o inferior es indicativo de un deterioro semántico.

  • En lo que respecta a los controles, ninguno falló en más de tres tríadas en ninguna de las modalidades. Esto permite situar el puntaje de corte en 2, de manera tal que un paciente con compromiso semántico tendrá dificultades con más de 2 tríadas.

How to Administer

Administer the following version of the PPT according to the language dyad. The following table is meant for illustrative purposes and not as a tool for administration. Each RedCap project is already programmed with the version that should be administered.

• For this evaluation, you will present the images to the participant, and they must identify which of the images below corresponds to the one above. The participant can say the number of the image (1 or 2) or the name of the object that corresponds. If the participant is unable to say the number or the name, the participant may point to their response. For remote administration, please ask a caretaker to assist with saying what number/item the patient is pointing to. Mark correct or incorrect based on the participant’s response.

• Script for instructions (example 1): Here are three pictures. You have to decide which one of these two at the bottom goes best with the one at the top. Is it number 1 or number 2? 

  • If it is correct: That's right. They go together because a waistcoat and a bow tie are both worn by men

  •  If it is incorrect: That’s not quite right. In this case, the bow tie goes with the waistcoat because they are both worn by men

Cómo Administrar

Administre la siguiente versión de la Prueba de Pirámides y Palmeras (PPT) según la díada lingüística. La siguiente tabla es solo para fines ilustrativos y no debe usarse como herramienta de administración. Cada proyecto en RedCap ya está programado con la versión que debe administrarse.

Para esta evaluación, usted presentará las imágenes al participante, quien debe identificar cuál de las imágenes de abajo corresponde con la imagen de arriba. El participante puede decir el número de la imagen (1 o 2) o el nombre del objeto que corresponde. Si el participante no puede decir el número ni el nombre, puede señalar su respuesta. Para la administración remota, por favor pida a un cuidador que ayude diciendo qué número u objeto está señalando el paciente. Marque si la respuesta es correcta o incorrecta en función de la elección del participante.

Guion para las instrucciones (ejemplo 1):
Aquí hay tres imágenes. Tienes que decidir cuál de estas dos de abajo va mejor con la de arriba. ¿Es el número 1 o el número 2?

• Si es correcto: Muy bien. Van juntos porque un chaleco y una pajarita son prendas que usan los hombres.

• Si es incorrecto: No es del todo correcto. En este caso, la pajarita va con el chaleco porque ambos son prendas que usan los hombres.
