What is the DL Benson Figure?

The DL Benson test is an assessment in which the patient is first asked to copy a figure while trying to remember it, and later to draw it freehand without any visual cues. Then, the patient must identify the correct figure from a set of four options.

This test is used to evaluate visuospatial and visuoconstructive functions, as well as planning and organizational skills.

It is useful for assessing difficulties in visual perception and fine motor skills in patients.

El test DL Benson es una prueba en la que se le pide al paciente que, en primer lugar, realice la copia de una figura tratando de recordarla y, posteriormente, que la dibuje a mano alzada sin referente visual. Por último, se le indique que señale, entre cuatro opciones, cuál es la figura que ha copiado y dibujado.

Es una prueba que se utiliza para evaluar la función visoespacial y visoconstructiva, así como habilidades de planificación y organización.

Es útil para valorar las dificultades en la percepción visual y la motricidad fina de los pacientes.

Scoring:

• Scoring for the Benson Copy:

  Each element of the copied figure is scored as follows:

  • 2 points if the element is both accurately drawn and correctly placed within the figure (1 point for accuracy, 1 point for correct placement).

  • 1 point if the element is either inaccurately drawn but correctly placed, or accurately drawn but incorrectly placed.

  • 0 points if the element is neither accurately drawn nor correctly placed.

  A bonus point is awarded only if all elements are both precisely drawn and accurately positioned. All elements must be drawn in the correct proportions. All connections between elements must be clean, and there must be no extraneous lines.

  Each element of the figure is scored as follows:

Figure Recognition

Mark the patient’s response as either “correct” or “incorrect.”

Once the test has been administered, photographs of the patient’s drawn figures must be taken and uploaded to the Benson instrument in RedCap. If the test is being conducted remotely, the patient should be asked to show their drawings to the camera so that appropriate screenshots can be captured.

How to Interpret the Results?

Poor performance on the test helps identify and characterize difficulties in visual memory and spatial abilities, which may be indicative of cognitive impairment or neurodegenerative conditions.

  Cada elemento de la figure copiada se puntúa como:

  • 2 puntos si el elemento se dibuja correctamente y se coloca correctamente en la figura (1 punto por precisión, 1 punto por ubicación).

Reconocimiento de figura

Marc la opción “correcta” o “incorrecta” en relación a la respuesta del paciente.

Una vez administrado el test, deben fotografiarse los dibujos de las figuras realizadas por el paciente para subir los archivos en el instrumento de Benson en RedCap. En caso de estar realizando el test telemáticamente, se le pedirá al paciente que muestre los dibujos a la cámara para poder realizar las capturas de pantalla oportunas.

¿Qué indican los resultados?

El mal rendimiento en la prueba permite detectar y caracterizar dificultades en la memoria visual y las habilidades espaciales que pueden ser indicativas de problemas cognitivos o neurodegenerativos.

How to Administer

Copy Phase

• The patient is shown the slide with the Benson figure and asked to copy it as accurately as possible onto a blank sheet of paper. It is important to leave the figure visible to the participant for 5 seconds and to say: “Please make sure to remember this design, because I will ask you to draw it from memory later.”

It is recommended to take note of the order in which the patient completes the details of the figure whenever possible.

The goal at this stage is to assess visuospatial perception and planning abilities.

Delayed Recall Phase

• After approximately 10–15 minutes, the patient is asked to draw the figure again without seeing it. Instruction: “Do you remember the figure I asked you to copy earlier? I’d like you to draw as much of it as you can remember.”

This phase assesses long-term visual memory.

Recognition Phase

• After completing the delayed recall phase, the patient is presented with a slide showing 4 figures, one of which is the figure they copied and drew from memory. The goal is for the patient to identify the correct figure.

Cómo Administrar

Fase de copia

• Se le muestra al paciente la diapositiva con la figura de Benson y se le pide que la copie lo mejor posible en una hoja en blanco. Es importante dejar la figura frente al participante durante 5 segundos y decir: “Asegúrese de recordar este diseño, porque le pediré que lo vuelva a dibujar más tarde de memoria”.

Es recomendable tomar nota del orden en que el paciente completa los detalles de la figura siempre que sea posible. 

El objetivo aquí es evaluar la percepción visuoespacial y las habilidades de planificación

Fase reproducción diferida

• Después de unos 10-15 minutos, se le pide al paciente que dibuje nuevamente la figura sin verla. Consigna: ¿Recuerda esa figura que le pedí copiara hace un tiempo? Quiero que dibuje lo que pueda recordar?

Esta fase evalúa la memoria visual a largo plazo.

Fase de reconocimiento

• Tras finalizar la reproducción diferida, se le presenta al paciente una diapositiva donde aparecen 4 figuras entre las cuales está la que se ha copiado y dibujado de memoria. El objetivo es que el paciente identifique la figura correspondiente.
