What is the Spelling Task?

The Spelling Task was also developed by Camille Wagner and Sonia Marqués at the Multilingual Aphasia and Dementia Research Lab, with the support of Dr. Stephanie Grasso, for Spanish-Catalan bilingual participants. Like the Reading Task, it includes real words, pseudowords, and foreign words; however, foreign words are administered only in the Spanish Spelling Task. A subset of the real and pseudowords was selected to create the Writing component, which was carefully balanced for number of syllables and orthographic complexity to ensure linguistic and cognitive consistency across items.

¿Qué es Spelling Task?

La Tarea de Escritura también fue desarrollada por Camille Wagner y Sonia Marqués en el Laboratorio de Investigación en Afasia y Demencia Multilingüe, con el apoyo de la Dra. Stephanie Grasso, para participantes bilingües español-catalán. Al igual que la Tarea de Lectura, incluye palabras reales, pseudopalabras y palabras extranjeras; sin embargo, las palabras extranjeras se administran únicamente en la Tarea de Escritura en español. Se seleccionó un subconjunto de palabras reales y pseudopalabras para crear el componente de escritura, el cual fue cuidadosamente equilibrado en cuanto al número de sílabas y la complejidad ortográfica, con el fin de garantizar la coherencia lingüística y cognitiva de los ítems.

When to Administer

  • In the treatment study, it is only administered during the pretreatment phase.

  • In the observational study, it is only administered in Observational 1.

Cuándo Administrar

  • En el estudio de tratamiento sólo se administra en la fase de pretratamiento.

  • En el estudio observacional sólo se administra en observacional 1.

Structure of the Test

The test is structured with 5 real words, followed by 5 pseudo-words, and in the case of the Spelling Task Span instrument, 3 foreign words are added.

Scoring:

  • The word written by the patient will be scored as correct or incorrect depending on whether it is written exactly as it appears in the test. For some words, two options are allowed. Example: fitsa/fitza.

Estructura de la Prueba

La prueba se estructura en 5 palabras reales, seguidas de 5 pseudopalabras y en el caso del instrumento Spelling Task Span se añaden 3 palabras extranjeras.

Puntuación:

  • La palabra escrita por el paciente se puntuará como correcta o incorrecta según si la ha escrito tal y cómo está en la prueba. En algunas de las palabras se permiten dos opciones. Ejemplo: fitsa/fitza.

How to Administer

  • The clinician will give the following instructions as we progress through the different sections.

  • If the test is administered remotely (via Zoom), we will ask the participant to show us the sheet with the written words once the test is completed, and we will take a screenshot to ensure we have the data.

To-Do List

  • Real Words: "Now we are going to do some writing exercises. I will say some words, and I would like you to write them as best as you can."

  • Pseudo-Words: "The next words I am going to read are not real. Write down what you hear."

  • Foreign Words: "The next words I am going to read are foreign words. Write down what you hear."

Cómo Administrar

  • El clínico dará las siguientes instrucciones según vayamos avanzando por los distintos apartados.

  • Si se administra por vía telemática (zoom) le pediremos al participante que nos enseñe la hoja con las palabras escritas una vez hayamos terminado la prueba y haremos una captura de pantalla para asegurar que tenemos los datos.

Lista de tareas:

  • Palabras reales: “Ahora vamos a hacer unos ejercicios de escritura. Le voy a decir unas palabras y quisiera que las escriba lo mejor que pueda”.

  • Pseudo Palabras: “Las próximas palabras que le voy a leer no son reales. Escriba lo que escuche”.

  • Palabras Extranjeras: “Las próximas palabras que le voy a leer son palabras extranjeras. Escriba lo que escuche”.
