Progressive Aphasia Severity Scale (PASS) Clinician Scale

The PASS is a clinical tool designed based on the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale to assess the presence and severity of impairment in specific speech and language domains. It was developed for various purposes, including helping in the diagnosis of the PPA subtype; monitoring changes in speech and language over time; planning speech and language treatment goals and evaluating progress; and providing education and counseling to the patient and their caregivers.

El PASS es una herramienta clínica diseñada a partir de la escala Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) para evaluar la presencia y gravedad del deterioro en dominios específicos del habla y del lenguaje. Fue desarrollado con distintos propósitos, entre los cuales ayudar en el diagnóstico del subtipo de PPA; monitorear los cambios en el habla y lenguaje a lo largo del tiempo; planificar objetivos de tratamiento del habla y lenguaje y evaluar su progreso y ofrecer educación y asesoramiento al paciente y a sus cuidadores.

When to Administer/Cuándo administrar

Structure of the Test

It consists of the following domains, which are assessed by the clinician through their judgment and other previously collected information (Pass Informant Questionnaire and test results).

  • Syntax and grammar

  • Word retrieval and expression

  • Auditory comprehension

  • Repetition

  • Fluency

  • Comprehension of isolated words

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Functional communication

It also includes three supplementary domains related to the pragmatic social aspects of communication.

Scoring:

  • The assessment scale consists of five levels of impairment, ranging from "normal" (0), "questionable or very mild" (0.5), "mild" (1.0), "moderate" (2.0), to "severe" (3.0). The levels for each domain provide a brief description of the skill/functionality to help the clinician decide which situation best fits the patient.

Estructura de la Prueba

Consta de los siguientes dominios, los cuales son evaluados por el clínico mediante su juicio y otra información previamente recopilada (Pass Informant Questionnaire y resultados de los tests realizados).

  • Sintaxis y gramática

  • Recuperación de las palabras y expresión

  • Comprensión auditiva

  • Repetición

  • Fluencia

  • Comprensión de palabras aisladas

  • Escritura

  • Comunicación funcional

También incluye tres dominios suplementarios relacionados con aspectos sociales pragmáticos de la comunicación.

Puntuación:

  • La escala de valoración consta de cinco niveles de afectación que van desde "normal" (0), "cuestionable o muy leve" (0.5), "leve" (1.0), "moderado" (2.0) a "grave" (3.0). Los niveles de cada dominio presentan una descripción breve de la habilidad/funcionalidad para ayudar al clínico a decidir que situación se ajusta más al paciente.  

How to fill out

  • This scale is completed by the lead clinician once all questionnaires, language and speech tests, and cognitive assessments for that visit within the study have been completed. In case of scoring uncertainty, it is recommended to consult with a co-clinician to reach a consensus. If there are further doubts, it is suggested to discuss them in a team meeting.

Cómo rellenar

  • Esta escala la completa el clínico principal una vez se han completado todos los cuestionarios, pruebas de lenguaje y de habla y cognitivas de esa visita dentro del estudio. En caso de duda de puntuación se recomienda consultar con co-clinico para tener un consenso. Si hay más dudas se sugiere comentarlo en reunión con equipo.

  • Even if the PASS informant questionnaire isn’t filled out we should always fill out this scale.
  • Aunque el cuestionario de informante PASS no esté completado, siempre debemos completar esta escala.
